Europe is a geographical entity made of 46 countries, and includes the UK. When you want to mention Europe without the UK you say Continental Europe. European Union is a political entity which includes UK. In WWI that political entity didn't exist yet, each country was totally independent. But they were still part of Europe.

No GB is PART of Europe. Sort of like Florida is part of the US. In WWI there were several European countries on each side during the war.
